JC Innsbruck – lectures for high school students
Students experience the diversity of chemistry

For the second time high school students in Tyrol had the chance to experience the diversity of chemistry by lectures from university professors. This year we were able to even combine two different interesting talks.
At first, Prof. Dr. Ronald Gust recited his life story in the medicinal research. In the framework of the development of new drugs in the field of cancer research he spoke about hormones and their influence on our body. Thereby, he vividly presented the connections between hormones and receptors in the case of oestrogen and the general procedure for finding potential therapeutic agents against tumours. Additionally, Prof.~Gust talked about the influence of phytoestrogens and other substances, like bisphenol A, on our body and explained how beer supports breast growth.

Before the second talk the students had the chance to take a little break and were provided by some snacks like sausages with bread, from the .

In the end, Prof.~Dr.~Hubert Huppertz explained solid state chemistry on the basis of modern developments in LED technology. He not only elucidated different methods to built a LED, but also told the students about the connection of a substance that was first synthesized by him during his doctoral thesis and more beautiful night sky above the city of Los Angeles. Thereby, he showed the different models and fluorescent substances on the stage.
