This talk introduces the key challenges of modern battery technologies in the context of the energy transition, including material complexity, sustainability, and critical raw materials. Starting from today’s lithium-ion batteries, it outlines why alternative chemistries such as lithium-sulfur and sodium-ion batteries are gaining attention. Using examples from operando X-ray and neutron scattering, cryo-electron microscopy, and machine-learning-based data analysis, the talk demonstrates how real-time insights into nanoscale processes help guide the design of next-generation, more sustainable batteries.
