16th Austrian Chemistry Days

From September 21st to 24th the 16th Chemistry Days of the Austian Chemical Society (in cooporation with the Italian Chemical Society) took place in Innsbruck. Emphasis was on Chemistry for a Sustainable Future. And since current chemistry students are future researchers and laboratory heads we provided several worthwhile courses, so to say custom-made for interested young chemists.

Chemistry a_side

Monday, September 21st 2015

Chemistry is in our ears and in our eyes. But - Chemistry aside - there are many more things a young scientist ought to know; from curious everyday applications to the Philosophy of Science. In this minisympsium you heard about all kinds of interesting scientific and science related matters - each with a side of chemistry!

Jungchemiker - Workshops

Wednesday, September 23rd 2015

Presenting Scientific Data: From weekly seminars in front of ones researchgroup to plenary lectures at a conference - the modern scientist seems to spend almost as much time presenting their data as it takes to obtain it. This workshop aimed to help beginners and intermediates to plan, structure and give presentations.

Statistics - The essence of science: Although widely neglected statistics represent the essence of science, since without those pesky formulas there is no way of determining the accurracy of results or meaningfully compare them to others. This seminar has refreshed your knowledge in basic statistics, thus being beneficial to freshmen and grad students.

LaTeX - Basic course: Creating text documents is a part of our everday life as scientists. However, common programms exhibit weaknesses regarding the typographical quality of e.g. mathematical notation, consistency throughout a document, layout output, automatic generation of contents and references, ect. An attractive alternative is LaTeX - a free programm for high-quality typesetting without graphical user interface, which means, you do not directly see the output when writing the content of your LaTeX document. Since starting to use LaTex is the most difficult part, the seminar taught you the necessary essentials.

LaTeX - Advanced course: For those who had already learned the pleasure of working with a professional text processing program - namely Latex -, this course provided some useful tools for the creation of scientific publications. In particular chemical structures were drawn with Latex, ChemDraw created *.eps documents were used, data were plotted with Gnuplot from within Latex and learnt how to cite in Latex.
