Enlightened Apocalypse – Prerequesite for sustainable ethics

On Tuesday, 24th of October 2017 the talk "Enlightened Apocalypse - Prerequi-site for sustainable ethics" was organized by the Jungchemiker Innsbruck. Professor Wolfgang Palaver from Innsbruck University talked about the ethic challenges scientists face in the 21st century and how they can become aware of their action's consequences.

First Prof. Palaver explained what lessons we can learn from past catastrophes based on natural and man-made disasters. Particularly he talked about the atomic incidents of Chernobyl and Fukushima, the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the chemical accidents in Seveso and Bhopal.

The second part was focused on the important role of apocalyptic thinkers for sustainable ethics. Starting with the German philosophers Hans Jonas and Günther Anders, Prof. Palaver explained how Dupuy developed the idea of the enlightened apocalypse. Finally, the potential for overcoming dangers, which could develop from scientific advances, was presented.

Afterwards Prof. Palaver answered questions from the audience leading to a vivid discussion.
