Invitation Young Chemists LectureWednesday, June 1st 2022, 5.15 pmHS H "Ulrich Santner" (NTEG230E), GrazUniversity of Technology, Kopernikusgasse 24, 8010 Grazand online via WebexBiogenic phosphonates were long time believed to be compounds of limited environmental importance. It has only been recognized during the last decades that they play a crucial role as alternative phosphorus source for microbes, especially in marine ecosystems where they are sometimes the most abundant available phosphorus source. Nowadays we know that about 16% of all microbial marine genomes encode genes for phosphonate biosynthesis and even 40% encode genes responsible for phosphonate breakdown. However, little is known about the metabolic pathways involved in these processes, which often involve a variety of fascinating, unique transformations and unusual intermediates. We try to fill some of the remaining white spots on the metabolic map of phosphonates by developing chemical strategies to access enantiomerically pure and/or isotopically labeled phosphonates. Here I will give an overview about how we use them, together with our collaborators, to investigate the mechanistic details of known and newly discovered enzymatic reactions of phosphonate metabolism. This talk can be attended at TU Graz, HS H as well as live-streamed via Webex. We kindly ask you to register in both cases until May 31st, 2022 on our website (free of charge):The Webex-link for joining the lecture will be distributed among registered participants on May 31st, 2022.
